Ever since I first heard the song on a TV programme called Trigger happy TV I’ve been captivated by Gordon Lightfoot’s “If You Could Read My Mind”. Although released back in 1970 it is song that doesn’t age. The gentle strumming of the acoustic guitar and Lightfoot’s clear vocal make it timeless for me.

I love a song that tells a story and we were to explore the lyrics then it’s clear the protagonist is looking for empathy — a connection. Has he been previously misunderstood? He wants her to feel his love for her in the deepest way possible?

Lightfoot, known for his introspective song writing, penned the lyrics during a period of personal turmoil following a divorce. The song lays bare the vulnerability of a man grappling with unspoken feelings. The opening line, “I think I’m going crazy,” immediately sets the tone, inviting the listener into the narrator’s emotional state.

The gentle strumming of the guitar and the melancholic piano chords create a soundscape that perfectly mirrors the narrator’s internal struggle. Perhaps this is a little more than simple love song? It’s a rallying cry for any of us seeking a deeper human connection.

This is a song that reminds us of the importance of communication, empathy, and the fragility of our emotions. Please comment what do you think of this song?
