Nothing makes the hairs go up on the back of your neck like the intro to Insomnia by Faithless. Released in 1995 the song opens with a deceptively gentle piano melody, quickly overtaken by Rollo’s signature driving breakbeat.
This fusion of house music’s propulsive energy with trip-hop’s atmospheric elements creates a soundscape that’s both danceable and introspective. The haunting synth line that weaves throughout adds another layer of texture, mimicking the restlessness of the narrator.

Maxi Jazz’s vocals are the anchor, delivered with a calming urgency. Lines like “Deep in the bosom of the gentle night / is when I search for the light” paint a vivid picture of the insomniac’s struggle against the darkness.
