The Rampant Horse, a sturdy old pub on the edge of Yorkshire’s notorious Longcroft Estate, was as familiar to its locals as the potholes in the estate’s roads or the graffiti on its walls. On any given evening, the air inside was thick with the scents of spilled lager, pub food and the warm hum of chatter. This particular night, however, brought with it an unusual guest and an air of mystery.

Dave and Vinny sat at their usual corner of the bar, engaged in their favourite pastime — bantering about life’s many injustices, most of which centred on Ken the barman and more specifically the price of a pint.

Ken had his arms crossed, always a dangerous sign. Another pointer was his sour expression.
“Why don’t you two go and pester someone else for a change?”

Vinny smirked, pulling his flat cap further down on his head. Scraps, his scruffy terrier, lay curled at his feet, snoring softly.
“Ken, if we didn’t pester you, your day would be as boring as the football you pretend to like.”

“Yeah,” Dave chimed in, jabbing a thumb towards Vinny. “Your night would be boring without us to liven it up for you.”

“Order a drink and shut up,” Ken grumbled, slapping a damp cloth on the bar.
